Distinction Among Primary, secondary and Tertiary Alcohol
Distinction Among Primary, secondary and Tertiary Alcohol:
The following Recation Can be used to distinguish three type of alcohol:
1)Lucas test
It is consists in treating the alcohols with the lucas reagent, i.e, a mixture of concentration hydrochloric acid and Zinc chloride .Appearance of cloudiness in the reaction mixture will indicate the formation of the alkyl chloride.A tertiary alcohol cloudiness appear immediately ,a secondary alcohol cloudiness appear within the five minute and the primary alcohol do not give any cloudiness at room temperature.
3) Victor Meyer's test :
The alcohol is subjected to the reaction sequence given below in a table form and the colour obtained are finally noted:
the primary alcohol give red colour, secondary alcohol produce blue colour and in case of tertiary alcohols, the solution remains colourless.
