Synthesis:
1) Hydroxylation of maleic and fumaric acids: Treatment of these cis and trans forms of acids with Aqueous potassium permanganate gives tartaric acid While maleic acid gives the meso tartaric acid fumaric acids gives tartaric acid .

 2)From acetylene The following sequence of the reaction from acetylene gives rise to tartaric acid.

Chemical property: When tartaric acid react with  potassium hydrogen sulphate,  it undergoes a Series of transformation to give ulimately pyruvic acid, as shown below :

2)tartaric acid react with HI the OH group are succssively reduced to give  malic and then succinic acid
